Abstract

The article discusses the necessity of separating artistic research from artistic development work and artistic practice respectively. It is argued that there are differences between these phenomena and that they ought to be defined and clarified by responsible authorities. Further it is argued that artistic research should be seen as a research area of its own, as a science of its own, be equated to other researchs/sciences, and on the same terms. This is argued in the light of the artistic research’s special conditions/privileges during its time of construction and establishment. Finally it is argued for third cycle research education for artistic research, as a base and qualification for research grants and for qualified employments (especially within the academia), and for increasing artistic research’s credibility within the scientific society in large.
