Abstract

This article is based on the results of the research project "The Music of Possibilities", developed by music educators at the SKUG Centre, a resource centre for Adapted Music Education in Tromsø. We first show how Assistive Music Technology can create new opportunities for aesthetic expression for students with disabilities, with the aim that they will be able to actively participate in their own musical education. We then present relevant research on Assistive Music Technology, and aim to show how opportunities for participation in music education can be created, when teachers use these technological innovations as a musical instrument in an art didactics context. Finally, we present the results of qualitative research interviews and participant observation with disabled children and young adult learners. We also collate the experiences of teachers, programmers, technologists, musicians and scientists who have long experience of conducting music lessons using Assistive Music Technology, with the aim of presenting some of the knowledge they have gained from working within the field.
