Guide to Guest Editors of Special Issues
Guide to Guest Editors of Special Issues
Professions & Professionalism (P & P) welcomes special issues with guest editors. A proposal for a special issue should be sent to the editor. The proposal should include a presentation of the topic of the special issue and a description of how contributors will be recruited.
The guest editors invite contributors, based on the proposal. Guest editors could either invite specific contributors which they find relevant or use an open invitation, for example an announcement at P&P’s website.
The guest editors also contribute with an introduction where the topic of the special issue and the included contributions are presented and contextualized as contributions to the field.
When composing the special issue, guest editors must consider both coherence among the included articles and their broader relevance for the readership of Professions & Professionalism. A special issue should normally comprise contributions from different national or regional contexts but could also focus on presenting perspectives from a specific country or region.
As for the division of labour between the guest editors and our editorial team, P&P’s policy is that the editorial team takes care of the review process, but guest editors’ suggestions for potential reviewers are very welcome. These must have sufficient distance/integrity vis-à-vis the author as well as the guest editors. Guest editors may, if they like, participate in the follow-up process after review.
An issue of P&P normally contains five articles. Guest editors should bear in mind that there is no guarantee that all the contributions will finally be accepted. Some contributions may not ultimately proceed after review, or authors may withdraw. It might therefore be wise to start with more than five potential contributions.
As for the submission process, the papers should be submitted through our website platform, and the authors should write in the cover letter that the paper is written for the special issue.
