Abstract

This article is based on several years of empirical observation, gathered from theatre practice, in which Karin B. Bjerkestrand and Anna Songe-Møller developed what is known as “Solidarity Forum Theatre” (SFT), a form of applied drama. This theatre form is based primarily on the Brazilian, Augusto Boal’s, Theatre of the Oppressed (Boal, 2006). Bjerkestrand and Songe-Møller used and further developed Boal’s theatre principle in a collaboration with various immigrant groups and drama-/theatre students. The intention has been to use the liberating potential into which this form of theatre invites us. In this article, Bjerkestrand and Songe-Møller present the theoretical groundwork, the underlying principles, and examples of SFT in action. Some of the participants’ own stories have been used to concretize the liberating aspect that arose in the theatre experiences. In relation to this Solidarity Forum Theatre practice, science theorist and art educator Venke Aure presents epistemological and didactic reflections.

Author Biographies

Venke Aure, Oslo University College of Applied Sciences

Venke Aure is associate professor in philosophy of science and art didactics at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences. Aure is particularly interested in art institutions and schools relative to different didactical regimes, and how art can be related to wider social processes. She has published books, reports and articles within these topics. Aure holds a Ph.D. in philosophy within art education, where communication of art to children and young people form the basis for art didactic discourse analysis.

Karin Brunvathne Bjerkestrand, Oslo University College of Applied Sciences

Cand.phil. Karin Brunvathne Bjerkestrand is Assistant Professor in drama at Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences in Norway. She is co-author of the Handbook: www.actandchange.eu .She was previously employed at the University of Stavanger and received the communication award from Stavanger Forum in 2008. In 2011 the project “Citizens in a Multicultural Society” received an award from the University of Stavanger.

Anna Songe-Møller, University of Stavanger

Cand.phil. Anna S. Songe-Møller is Associate Professor in drama at the University of Stavanger in Norway. She is co-author of the Handbook: www.actandchange.eu and the textbook: “Ibsen og Holberg i skolen” – drama as an aesthetic learning process. She was the artistic director of the medieval project: Pasjon08:www.pasjon.no in Stavanger. She taught at Bagamoyo Collage of Art in Tanzania in 2006. She received the communication award from Stavanger Forum in 2000 and in 2008. In 2011 the project “Citizen in a Multicultural Society” received an award from the University of Stavanger.
