In the autumn of 2019, a new structure will be implemented in vocational education programs in upper secondary school in Norway, and new curriculum frameworks are under preparation. A new vocational education program for ICT and media production will be established. This program will include more vocations and become broader than the former program for media and communication.
This article presents findings from a two-year qualitative study investigating the qualification requirements in the media graphic vocation, and the vocational relevance of the school-based part of the education for the apprentices in the trade. The study has followed six apprentices during their two-year apprenticeship period. The results presented are based on observations in the workplaces and 34 semi-structured interviews with the apprentices, media teachers, instructors in the apprentices’ workplaces and two representatives of the apprenticeship training office. The results show the essential competence requirements in the media graphic vocation, and strengths and weaknesses in today’s school-based education. The results point to necessary conditions to achieve a vocationally relevant education in the new education program.
