What happened to the boys? Where did they go?
Arts and crafts in a gender perspective

In this article, we investigate gender equality and gender stereotypes in the Norwegian school subject arts and crafts today. We see the arts and crafts subject, the teachers and the students as historical actors, who can contribute to maintenance or change of the subject. The theoretical framework is from sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and his argument that the school as a social institution tends to reproduce historical beliefs and divisions in the society. Using the didactic triangle as a tool for our analysis, we examine how curricula, institutional practices and academic and public debates have impact on the subject development until today. Throughout the article, we raise some questions and points to the needs of more research.
