Why students lack competent teachers in Art and Crafts

Abstract

As many as 50% of the teachers who teach the subject Art and Crafts in primary school have no credits in the subject. It is a weaker result than 20 years ago, and it is then easy to jump into the conclution that the poor result is due to a lack of trained teachers in the subject. But it is not so. In the survey presented in this article, those who are trained as professional teachers in design, art and crafts in the period 2008-2018 state that it is difficult to get employment in schools. And if they get a job in primary school, the study shows that they are often assigned to tasks other than teaching Art and Crafts. When local school leaders neglect to hire and employ qualified teachers, students will not benefit from competent teachers  already educated in Art and Crafts.
