Choosing a licence
The choice of license determines the creator’s rights, as well as rights and requirements pertaining to dissemination and prospective further revision of the work. For that reason, it is imperative to carefully consider which license to choose, since this determines how and under which conditions the work can be utilized in the future.
Several typed of open licenses have been drawn up under the Creative Commons (CC) umbrella, which provides free access to content under differing conditions.
The Norwegian context and Plan-S
Norwegian Open Access publications have to comply with Plan-S, requiring the immediate publication of research under a CC license. Plan-S permits publication in subscription journals, provided that a version of the articles is published in an open repository. Plan-S recommends using the CC-BY license, however other additions are also permitted.
Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)
Open Access journals can apply to be indexed in DOAJ, if the journal comply with requirements of openness and quality. Read more about why the journal should be indexed in DOAJ.. In order to be in our portfolio, we require that the journals strive to be indexed in DOAJ.
Please confer with the instructions on how to apply for membership in DOAJ.
DOAJ Seal of Approval
To show that a journal complies with best practice concerning open publishing, it can obtain the DOAJ seal of approval. Even though this is not a requirement, it is something to strive for. In any case, there are no technical obstacles for a journal not to achieve this.
Sherpa/ROMEO
Being part of our portfolio means being indexed in Sherpa/ROMEO. This is a service that permits you to look up journals and verify their Open Access policy.
Sherpa/JULIET
